Updated on July 24, 2019

There’s nothing quite like the refreshing, and nostalgic feeling of drinking a cold lemonade on a hot summer’s day!

As herbalists, we are always thinking of creative ways to get herbs into our everyday life. A classic lemonade recipe is a perfect thing to boost with the power of plants. Not only are we drinking something we enjoy, but something that’s also supporting our health.*

herbal lemonades

Green Tea Lemongrass: Bright and mildly stimulating, with a low caffeine content, we love green tea as an afternoon pick-me-up, as well as for itsbeneficial properties as a healthy beverage.* Its traditional tannic flavor with hints of lemony notes pairs perfectly with a cold lemonade!

Red Clover: A nourishing and supporting herb, red clover has traditional use as an alterative in supporting skin health – helping you glow from the inside out.* It’s perfect for summertime, and a great one for an iced beverage if you prefer fruity and floral notes. Fresh fruit like watermelon and raspberries pair lovely with this herbal lemonade.

Rose Hips with Hibiscus: This tea makes the perfect summer cooler with its fruity, tart and tangy berry flavor, and rose hips make the ideal tea for everyday wellness.* Long enjoyed throughout history, rose hips have rightly earned a reputation for supporting good health. It pairs deliciously with lemonade and makes for a bright summery pink lemonade that’s beautiful for any occasion. Consider brightening it up with a squeeze of lime and some edible flowers.

Herbal Lemonades

Serving Size: Makes about 1.5 quarts

Materials

Materials:

  • Glass pitcher
  • Citrus squeezer or juicer
  • Tea kettle
  • Measuring cups

Ingredients

Ingredients:

  • 8 lemons
  • 5 cups water
  • 5 Traditional Medicinals tea bags of your choice, from the list above.
  • 1 cup honey
  • Ice
  • Optional garnish of choice: fresh berries, fruit, edible flowers, lime or lemon wedges.

Directions

  1. Start by brewing the tea as you would if you were to serve it hot. Bring five cups of water to a full boil, then steep the five tea bags in a covered container for the time specified on the package, which ranges from 5-15 minutes, depending on the tea. While steeping, it’s important to use a container with a closed top to prevent all the herbal goodness from evaporating; a glass mason jar is great for this.
  2. We recommend adding the honey while the batch is still warm so that it melts quickly.
  3. Once the steeping time is up, remove the tea bags, squeezing out any excess tea, and refrigerate the tea for 15- 20 minutes.
  4. While waiting for the tea to cool, juice the lemons into a glass pitcher. Once the tea is cold, add the honey tea to the lemon juice and stir well. Serve over ice and add a garnish of your choice.
